Katra Film Series 2019

By Jason Godbey, Creative Director, Behind the Rabbit Productions

This week I had the opportunity to attend the finale of the Katra Fim Series and interview some of the filmmakers and stars of the evening including actor Laura Gomez (video above) the star of Uniform.

Katra presents a selection of films quarterly and provides a platform for indie filmmakers to showcase their work. This year’s Grand Finale was held at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn. I interviewed some of the filmmakers on the red carpet, including Alex Breaux, the writer, director and star of this year’s Grand Prize winner Campfire Alpha; Alexis Karl, co-director of The Lex Requiem; co-director Walter Brandes and actor Anthony Grasso of Kill Al; Nikhil Melnechuk, producer of Fevah, and director Aleksey Reznikov and writer/producer/actor Carter Winter of Dead Layer.

One of the standout films was the animated short, Lotte That Silhouette Girl  by Elizabeth Beecherl & Carla Patullo about Lotte Reiniger, a German Film Director who pioneered the art of silhouette animation. The short tells the story of Reiniger’s life and filmography and is narrated by Reiniger herself. It’s a touching film with beautiful animation made in the style of Reiniger’s silhouettes.

Overall, I was impressed by the quality of films. Founder and Executive Director, Geoffrey Guerrero and his team have put together a well-curated series, and for the final night, The Alamo Drafthouse screen lent a prestige not often accorded to short films. For filmmakers looking to get their short screened in New York City, I highly recommend the Katra Film Series.
