This weekend We Are One: A Global Film Festival kicked off at 7 am ET with introductions from celebrities: Whoopi Goldberg, John Tutorro. Olivia Wylde, Hugo Weaving, and Diego Luna to name a handful. In addition to the stars, various members of film festival organizations from all over the world spoke about their festivals and what these festivals mean to their respective communities.
We Are One features a wide range of projects including: narrative and documentary features, animated shorts, as well as television and web series to virtual reality. These selections are curated by the participating festivals and come from all over the world. Once they premiere, each film will live on the festival YouTube page until June 7th.
Some of the standouts from this weekend of the festival included the animated shorts: Bird Karma, Bilby, and Marooned. There were a number of short films that were exceptional including: The Light Side by Ryan Ebner, Electric Swan by Konstantina Kotzamani, Toto by Marco Baldonado, and Egg by Micheal J. Goldberg.
The feature documentary Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records tells the story of the evolution of reggae music in the UK starting in the 60s and 70s. We hope to have a full review of that soon. Another documentary project that stood out was Motorcycle Drive By which follows the band Third Eye Blind on tour and discusses one of their most famous songs and how it came to be.
This weekend featured interviews with Jackie Chan and Guillermo Del Toro. Chan spoke about the need for film productions to be more environmentally minded while Del Toro spoke more about the art of filmmaking. I would definitely recommend watching both to anyone who is interested in making movies.
We Are One is the first of its kind, a virtual film festival curated by 20 film festivals from all over the world. It’s truly a global festival and a showcase for creators from every corner of the globe. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend this amazing event.
